Movement Coaching

“Pain, however undesirable, serves an important biological function acting as a warning signal that all is not well in the movement system.”

About Andrew

Our movement capability degrades with time and adapts to our environments. I know this to be true because through passively abusing my body, overeating, moving too little, being too stressed my back gave way; I sat too much, had an inactive lifestyle, and didn’t look after the basics; day to day movement. That was my trigger, and it prompted me into action to certify as a Personal Trainer and cross-train to movement coaching and certifying in the Functional Movement System.

My Aim

As such, I aim to help individuals recover, rehabilitate or move away from aches, pain and discomfort.  I am passionate about providing the right tools to educate clients in building internal strength and retraining motor control in movement. They can continue to develop and grow themselves to become more confident, feel safer, healthier, faster, or take on physical challenges they previously thought unachievable.

My Clients

I aim to help people in the short term, maximum 8-10 weeks. I don’t want to retain clients in pain but to move them away from pain, ‘teach them to fish’ so they can maintain and grow if they wish.  If individuals choose to progress to another level, I can help them with achieving new goals.

The recent years of training have led to injuries for which I have been suffering with for some time which equally was leading to bad movement habits, and found that I wanted to shift a little focus on more specific technique and movement, which is why I was drawn to Andrew. To relearn technique and to be more conscious of how I moved for day to day benefit and also to improve movement during training with injury prevention in mind.

I started seeing Andrew due to experiencing lower back pain. After just a handful of sessions, I am already feeling the benefit of his experience. He has been most informative and has a wealth of knowledge. I feel both my fitness levels and mobility have improved. Along with the sessions, he put a plan in place to enable me to carry out regular exercise away from the sessions to ensure my mobility continues to improve.

Andrew is an excellent personal trainer with a strong focus on technique. He takes the time to get to you know and make you feel at ease. Andrew tailors each session to help you achieve your goals. I highly recommend Andrew as a PT, especially for anyone who has a particular sporting love that they want to support with balanced and thoughtful training sessions.

Coaching

"If we see deficiencies, dysfunctions, asymmetries, mobility problems, motor control, stability or balance problems, we really shouldn’t expect the Pilates routine to arbitrarily fix the problem. It might, and it might not. You’re just hoping it’ll work... But you haven’t clearly defined the problem yet."

Gray Cook

Throwing yourself into exercise or training, even Pilates or yoga, without a thoughtful process is a sure-fire way to get injured, specifically if you don't have the mobility, stability or strength to manage the demands exercise places on the body. If you have pre-existing pain, your brain will just want your body to survive the experience.

I provide private or semi-private coaching for anyone at any level of physical ability to ensure my clients receive the best care and service. Future plans include movement workshops, focusing on specific movement patterns, and small group movement and maintenance classes. Please contact me if you are interested in future classes.

Injury rehabilitation, relief from musculoskeletal related pain, body transformation, endurance and performance will all come as a result of a well-planned and consistent approach to movement, training, and exercise.

My job is to help you arrive at a place where moving through life is achieved with ease rather than something you approach fearful of aches and pains.

Movement Assessment

45 minute appointment

Functional Movement Screen or Selective Functional Movement Assessment and a comprehensive report.

Movement Screen/Assessment

I believe every single person should have the opportunity to understand how they move and how that may translate into their daily lives.

If you have regular muscular or musculoskeletal aches and pains, ongoing injuries or struggling to recover, have been on pain killers or other approaches for more than two months you have nothing to lose in having an assessment.  These sessions often highlight areas you would not have previously considered.

Based on an initial conversation by phone or in person, this 45-minute session will cover:

  • Functional Movement Screen (FMS) or Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) depending on your symptoms
  • Comprehensive Report

Based on the outcome, we can decide together on the best way forward for you. Typically eight sessions are all that is required to begin to correct areas found in the movement assessment and establish a good foundation on which to build.

There is no hard sell for onward commitment. The assessment and report may be enough for you to make small adjustments to your daily life or use it for consideration in your training.

Move:Pain

Private Coaching

A set of comprehensive sessions and plan, giving you the tools and techniques to help move away from aches, pain and discomfort.

Movement Coaching is about learning to manage, and in some cases, eradicate discomfort, aches and pain and becoming more resilient.

Does pain inhibit your life or compromise your movement?  Have you been seeing a physiotherapist, chiropractor or sports therapist for more than two months?

Do you experience postural, muscular or musculoskeletal pain or discomfort, do you need more flexibility, co-ordination or feel unstable/lack balance.

If so, I will work closely with you, and I will share the tools and techniques to help you maintain your body and keep pain at bay.  So much so you won't need me.

I offer this work at £700 for eight appointments, followed by four online support sessions and ongoing access to the FMS application.

Dedicated to you to the point of not needing me to help you afterwards.  The choice to progress further to a goal you previously thought impossible is yours.  It may be that you just want to come and play.

If the work I do resonates with you but is way beyond your budget, please contact me as I reserve time each month to assist those on tighter budgets.

Move:Progress

Private Coaching

A set of comprehensive sessions, giving you the tools and techniques to help you achieve more in exercise or daily life.

If you have no aches or pain but feel your exercise approach has stalled this Move:Progress may be the breakthrough approach required. The aim is to help you achieve your specific health and wellness goals whatever they may be, and that could be that you can play with your children without getting breathless or lift more bags of shopping in one go, even run a marathon.

I always start with a movement assessment. If we haven't already done one together, we will cover this in our first appointment. Should any of the tests present pain or discomfort, I will recommend Move:Pain coaching first.

Based on the results of the movement assessment, a brief life/workstyle conversation, I will create an approach specific to your results.

I don't set plans that are typical or routine. Instead, there will be variety and movement play with a balanced approach that supports you in achieving your specific goals, whether that is related to exercise or lifestyle.

Move:Play

Movement classes

Would you like to play with movement to develop and improve physical and mental health and wellbeing?

If you are not a fan of exercise but would like to join like-minded people to move more and get outdoors, this could be for you.

Would you like to learn and improve your movement, mobility, stability and strength but want an alternative to typical exercise classes, boot camps, Pilates or Yoga?

Based on typical movement patterns that translate to everyday life, our movement play will help turn on muscle groups that have gone into hibernation, tap into areas of tightness and help build overall body stability.

The purpose of the sessions is not to have you dripping in sweat and feeling wasted at the end but feeling like you are getting to know your body, areas of strength and weakness, areas the brain worries about and focusing on purposeful movement.

These sessions are open to all of any ability and all ages, they are non-competitive, and you can play at your own pace.

You can pay as you go or subscribe to come along to multiple sessions a month.

Contact me below for more information.
